CATEC inducts inaugural four to Wall of Fame

Posted by lbanner on May 19, 2008

The Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC), at a luncheon on Friday, May 16, inducted four inaugural members into the CATEC Wall of Fame. All four were recognized posthumously. Family members were in attendance to receive the honor:

  • Joseph Moore-longtime supporter of CATEC, adult instructor and member of Central Virginia Apprenticeship Council;
  • Allen Miller-Albemarle County and CATEC Special Education instructor who worked at CATEC from 1990-2003;
  • Robert Barrett-former Electricity instructor who worked at CATEC from 1975 to 1990; and
  • Lance Van de Castle-began teaching adult courses in 1993. Served on CVAC Board and was President of CATEC Foundation Board.

” … Their legacies will certainly live on with all those that they have touched,” said Darah Bonham, CATEC Director.

As explained in the CATEC news release, the “Wall of Fame” is a visual representation of CATEC and shares the untold story of some important individuals in its history. It showcases the legacy of students who enhanced their skills at CATEC, employees who faithfully served CATEC and contributed to the success of the students and the school, and generous supporters of CATEC who gave of their talents and time.

In addition to the four inductees, at the luncheon CATEC recognized Charles Hendricks from the Gaines Group as the 2008 Contributor of the Year for his work on the design and construction of the Hinge House being built at CATEC.

CATEC House on Auction Block

Posted by lbanner on August 31, 2007

Students of the carpentry program at CATEC built a house last year that’s now on the auction block. The house is currently located behind CATEC, off Rio Road in Albemarle County, and there is an open house scheduled for Saturday, September 8th, 9am-noon. The auction itself is scheduled for Saturday, September 15th at 10am, with a viewing from 8:00-9:30am. The auction will take place in the vicinity of the home behind CATEC.

Last year’s CATEC house was built following the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines for sustainable buildings. The guidelines promote a more energy efficient, and environmentally friendly building. Several “Green” features of the CATEC house include: Hardi-plank Siding, Standing Seam Metal Roof, Non-toxic Cellulose Wall Insulation, Low VOC Caulks and Adhesives, Low E Argon-filled Window, and Energy Star Light Fixtures.

For more information on LEED, look to a C-VILLE Weekly story on LEED, August 14 issue, and its role in a number of local projects including the new Belvedere development project off Rio Road.

Tracking local business news

Posted by bchapman on June 29, 2007

Hey there. We are starting this blog–we’ll call it “c-note”–as a way to track and report on local business news. We decided a while back that business would not be one of the news beats that C-Ville Weekly would cover regularly. We just don’t have the necessary access in a small town where most of the business is privately held. That decision has given us some heartburn on occasion when we do hear some good business scoop, so now we’ll try to capture things like that here. If you’ve got tips or thoughts for us, send them to c-note@c-ville.com.
