Virginia Workforce Center grand opening Dec. 10: Governor Kaine to speak

Posted by lbanner on December 6, 2007

The Grand Opening of the Virginia Workforce Center – Charlottesville will be held at 1:30 p.m. on December 10 at the Center’s location, 2211 Hydraulic Rd., Charlottesville, VA (the former Embarq building). The schedule of events will include: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. open house with tours; 1:30 p.m. press conference with Governor Timothy M. Kaine and Daniel G. LeBlanc, Senior Advisor to the Governor for Workforce.

A long time coming, the Virginia Workforce Center – Charlottesville is actually a prototype for Virginia of the “one-stop center” concept envisioned in the Federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998. The WIA requires that a number of employment-related services be provided through a one-stop system, designed to make accessing employment and training services easier for job seeker customers.

The opening of the Virginia Workforce Center – Charlottesville is a result of a coordinated effort among the Special Advisor to the Governor for Workforce Development’s office, the Piedmont Workforce Network, and local Workforce Investment Act (WIA) partners.

Tenants in the new one-stop center include:

Virginia Employment Commission
Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services
Veterans Affairs office
Piedmont Virginia Community College
Virginia Department of Education
George Mason University Virginia Procurement Technical Assistance Program
WorkSource Enterprises
Jefferson Area Board for Aging
Charlottesville Department of Social Services
Choice Group
Career Support Systems
Goodwill Industries
Workforce Investment Act program

Some of the above listed organizations have or will be moving all of their operations to the new center, while others will have representatives there. The Charlottesville field office of the Virginia Employment Commission moved about half of its employees into the center, leaving the other half at its Preston Avenue building.

To attend the opening, you can RSVP to Kristen Wilson at pwn@tjpdc.org or 434-979-7310 ext. 310, or visit www.workforce.virginia.gov.

Amusement park for kids to become dermatological playground

Posted by lbanner on August 27, 2007

What was once a retreat for kids, or maybe for their parents as their kids bounced from video game to video game, or literally bounced in the indoor moonwalk, is to become a retreat for seekers of beauty and comfort.

“Picture a combination of a four-star spa resort with a visit to the doctor,” says Dr. Bonnie Straka, owner of Signature Medical Spa and Albemarle Dermatology, of her recent purchase of the former Planet Fun building on Berkmar Drive. “The concept for our medical spa is to create a nurturing, high-end atmosphere to cater to our clientele, so that a visit to the doctor for aesthetic treatments ends up feeling more like a retreat.”

The Signature Medical Spa, a division of Albemarle Dermatology Associates, offers a number of services and caters to patients looking for aesthetic treatments, skin care products, and cosmeceuticals. It has become the region’s largest Botox provider, according to their news release on the recent building purchase.

Construction is now under way and the grand opening of the new medical office/spa facility is scheduled for early 2008.

Dr. Straka purchased the 8,400 square foot Planet Fun building from Stonehaus, Inc., but the relationship doesn’t end there. Stonehause Inc. will be managing the entire Planet Fun building redevelopment process on Dr. Straka’s behalf. According to Cass Kawecki, Director of Marketing and Sales for Stonehaus, “this was a great chance to win the trust of an important client, to bring a unique vision to reality, and demonstrate our value through executing on many services related to the real estate development process under one roof.”

In fact, the former Planet Fun building will be but one roof, potentially, among many, as Stonehaus works on plans for the full 9.2-acre commercial development along Berkmar Drive. “A work in progress,” the intent is that the acreage will be built out over the following three to five years and will include medical, office, and retail tenants.
