The Charlottesville Silver Gavel Unit of the Virginia Association of Parliamentarians will present a special seminar on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 7:00 PM, at the Sojourners United Church of Christ, located at 1017 Elliott Avenue, in Charlottesville. The guest lecturer will be Mr. T. Page Johnson, PRP, whose presentation will be, By-Laws, What Are They And Why Do We Need Them?

CATEC Annual Job Fair: Saturday, January 24, 2009

From a January 20 CATEC news release: The Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC) is pleased to announce its 7th Annual Job Fair and Expo on Saturday, January 24, 10 am to 5 pm, at the Charlottesville Fashion Square Mall.

The Expo features instructors and students from each of CATEC’s unique programs, giving demonstrations of their classroom work and providing information on registration for the 2009/10 academic year. This is designed as a curriculum expo for parents and students interested in learning more about CATEC programs. Registration for CATEC begins shortly, so all parents and students should plan to attend and experience first-hand the wide range of choices CATEC offers students in the Charlottesville -Albemarle region.

Several area employers in the health industry will be recruiting on-site for new personnel as well as providing information to the community about their respective services. Many Post-secondary institutions, including PVCC, National College, and Averett University will also be available throughout the day to discuss program offerings and career pathways.

Chamber to host Dr. Grieger’s “Extraordinary Customer Service”

The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce is offering an event that may be of interest to you in these tight financial times. Customer service can make or break a company in a competitive market. The Chamber will be hosting Extraordinary Customer Service — both a seminar and a workshop — on Thursday afternoons January 22 and  29. Offered in two parts, it is a seminar in which you will be taught proven, useful concepts and tools. It is a workshop in that you will develop your own action plan that you can immediately put to constructive use. The program is taught by Dr. Russel Grieger and will be held at the Chamber.

Chamber to host annual Business Expo at JPJ Oct. 29th

I imagine Chamber President Timothy Hulbert is pleased. This year he and the Chamber fulfill a longtime dream with the hosting of a Business Expo large enough to hold at UVa’s John Paul Jones Arena. The 2008 Chamber Business Expo, to be held on Wednesday, October 29 from 1:30 – 7 PM, has near 90 businesses participating this year. That’s +20 from last year and year’s prior. This year’s Business Expo also features a Chamber Workshop entitled “Navigating Difficult Conversations,” presented by Rachel Brozenske, Vice President, Allison Partners, a Chamber Network Luncheon, and a Business After Hours.

Piedmont Futures is now recruiting businesses and organizations for the 7th-Grade Career Expo to be held November 17 & 18 at UVA’s Newcomb Hall. Businesses host booths at the expo with interactive displays that teach students about their particular career areas. It is a good opportunity to engage students, to highlight a career path for them that might include your business, and to encourage them to think about and plan for their future. Darden Faculty to Discuss Business Opportunities and Innovations, Oct. 18

The University of Virginia continues its More Than the Score lecture series this Saturday with a faculty lecture on trends driving changes in businesses, Clean Commerce: Opportunities and Innovation.

The United States market has opportunities for clean products, from renewable energy to benign materials. Andrea Larson, Professor of Business Administration at the Darden Graduate School of Business, will discuss trends driving change in business. She will highlight innovative companies working to offer substitute products and technologies as solutions to ecological and environmental health challenges. Larson will examine the significance of this emerging model of business.

October 12-18, 2008 is annual VIRGINIA CAREER WEEK Discover Your Future, sponsored by The Virginia Career Education Foundation. The purpose of the week is to celebrate and extend appreciation to business and school partnerships for helping schools in their community promote career awareness, and also to kick-off career events for 2008-2009. The announcement notes that a goal for the year is to have more businesses and their employees involved with providing career information to young people of all ages, thus providing one more adult to talk with them about making informed career decisions. Businesses: Your are encouraged to contact your area schools to see how you might be involved in providing current career information related to your business – you may be influencing your next generation of employees!

Small Business Person of the Year to be awarded at annual Chamber Spring Luncheon – May 29th

The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce has a full agenda lined-up for its 2008 Chamber Spring Business Luncheon to be held Thursday, May 29th at Farmington Country Club. Chamber leadership will award the 2008 Chamber Small Businessperson of the Year; will recognize this year’s graduating class of the Chamber’s Leadership Charlottesville program as well as recent recipients of the Charlottesville Community Scholarships; and will feature an address by William C. Bosher, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Public Policy & Education, Executive Director of the Commonwealth Educational Policy Institute in the School of Education at the Wilder School of Government & Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.

“Ethics in Organizations” at U.Va. School of Continuing and Professional Studies – May 13

This workshop will “explore what it means to be ethical, how to make ethical decisions, and how to muster the moral courage to do the right thing. Participants will also examine why good leaders sometimes end up doing bad things, and how good leaders can create good organizations – those with a healthy ethical climate … Participants will leave with a toolkit for enhancing ethics in their own work and organization,” so says U.Va. School of Continuing and Professional Studies about their May 13th, 2008 workshop, Ethics in Organizations: How to Lead and Live in a Workplace You Admire. Sounds good to me.
